Practical Angel Magic: An Updated Review

Sir Anon’s searing review of Stephen Skinner and David Rankine’s Practical Angel Magic of Dr. John Dee’s Enochian Tables was met with a largely ad hominem response from David Rankine on his Facebook group some time ago. This now forms the subject of an extended critique by Sir Anon, touching upon a number of subjects including “transcription and translation errors, unsubstantiable conjectures about historical characters presented as fact, false assertions concerning key documents that the editors don’t appear to have examined […] and inclusions that appear to be clearly plagiaristic”.

Additionally, with respect to the Enochian Manuscripts, a new (and much less murky-looking) microfilm of MS. Sloane 3188 has since become available from the British Library, and this is now online
. A correction has furthermore been made to the listing of MS. Sloane 3189
, which included a duplicate image at one point.

Casaubon's "True and Faithful Relation" PDF

The offices of The Magickal Review were again abuzz during the week when a rather heated conversation about the increasingly embarrassing delay in the publication of “The Angelic Conferences of Dr. John Dee and Sir Edward Kelley” prompted our editor to pull out a knife and wave it threateningly in my direction, before stomping past me in the direction of the bookshelf. Alarm turned to consternation when he pulled out the office copy of Casaubon’s “True and Faithful Relation” and proceeded to cut it to bits. Manfully suppressing my disbelief and anger at this apparent fit of pique, I enquired in what I hoped was a chillingly calm tone as to the meaning of the outrage, and he pointed me towards:

Review: The 30 Trials of Ix and the Angels

Avalon Guest reviews Mark Durant’s new book, an account of scrying the 30 Aethyrs backwards and forwards.

“It is apparent from the very beginning of this semi-fictional account of the scrying of the 30 Enochian Aethyrs that the author has a painfully self-conscious and unrefined prose style, with a tendency toward pomposity. In the Introduction, whilst attempting to convey an atmosphere of romance and mystery, he can do nothing more than give a parody of the opening of Zanoni; and what is clearly meant to read as literary restraint is merely the best that this unpracticed hand can muster to its command...”

Silly Season Satire Series #3

The conclusion of the silly season satire series, in which the truth about witches is revealed, and an Archbishop admits to a come-uppance:

http://www.themagickalreview.org/occult-newswire/witches-really-are-evil.php

Many editors find their desks full at this time of year, with all kinds of nonsensical rubbish, pretty snow-clad repentance and other trash. Fortunately, being in the outer reaches of the spiral galaxy known as “The Internet”, the editor of The Magickal Review is pleased and proud to announce that no such frivolity has been received in regard to such matters, save a portrait of Rudolf II’s Vertumnus-cum-C.S. Lewis’ Aslan, which is actually quite pretty, but will not be reproduced for reasons of Occult Dignity (cf. Ps. Dionysius).

Furthermore, any comments along the lines of “Aiwass should have chosen a better festival period than early spring” will be met with profound indifference on the Grand Scale; which is, Qabalistically speaking, Silence x 1000 = 65 000.

To cut a long story short, the civil year of 2004 has been a ridiculously easy one for The Magickal Review. Practically no content of any real worth has been added to the site since, oh, I dunno, September of 2003; except for: the digital scans of the Enochian manuscripts; The Ritual Opening of the Veil; the “Kelley Angelic Font” (and notes); the Dee & Kelley cryptic crossword; an update to Sepher Sephiroth (revised); a new edition of Liber AL; the A∴A∴ Sigils; Rituals 25 & 28; and some turgid rubbish by Bulwer-Lytton and Aleister “Who?” Crowley; etc., etc.

Anyway, sensible scholars will not be batting any eyelids at this repertoire of inanity, and will move on to pastures greener, such as Lashtal.com’s Christmas festivities. Ah well! It’s all a matter of taste, as the poet said.

Readers who noticed the proofing error in Section III of Burton’s “Kasidah” are awarded a special prize: the editor is almost frantic with despair, and his best friend has just handed him a pistol with one bullet, and told him “There’s only one way out for a gentleman”. The Staff of the 2005 Magickal Review are saddened, but can cope with the loss. Selah!

It is undeniable that there is a certain climatic charm at this time of year, for those who live in Northern latitudes and have central heating, which conduces towards a sense of goodwill and merriment amongst those who have access to a drinks-cabinet or other source of analgesia. This alternative [self-indulgent] Mithramas message comes from just such a spirit of giniality – ahem! – geniality:

There are those who are interested in politics, and those who are not. I will skip mention of the success of certain organizations in pulling off the “Ohio vote” thing, and void all mention of things such as “strobe-lights” and so-on in respect of Diana, etc., etc.; just a mere note for the civil year of 2004 which reads: “Was it me?” No!

2004 was an absurd proposition from the start. It began with high hopes, suffered from the indignity of failure, and died the death it deserved. Amen! Roll on 2005; or, shouldst thou be the kin of the New Æon, salutest thou the spectre of three more months of the year! Amen.

Star Ruby/Grimoire Notes/Isabel Burton Award

It was only after the collapse of civilization, and the death of the English language, that it was possible for translators finally to prove the plagiarism of the late Prof. Richard Feynman, who was found to have copied directly from a long-dead poet the line “consider the waves crashing on a shingly shore” when he wrote in his book on Quantum Electrodynamics, “Consider radiation colliding on a supported tile.” Fortunately, translators of equal skill are plentiful in this era:

Previous Updates

A PDF version of the notes on the Angelic Alphabet:
http://www.themagickalreview.org/enochian/alphabet.pdf

A little piece of Crowley poetry:
http://www.themagickalreview.org/poetry/la_gitana.html
Vector graphic versions of the A∴A∴ Eye in the Triangle and the A∴A∴ Seal have been added to the Thelemic Classics section:
http://www.themagickalreview.org/classics/

Whilst updating the [already “revised”] Sepher Sephiroth, our esteemed editor discovered an amusing little gematric correspondence, which is noted here:

Sum [1-61] = 1891 = MChShVP H-LBN, “The Naked Splendour”. (The only factors of 1891 are 31 & 61.) See Liber AL I:14, I:46, et passim.

This proves that he was wrong to exclude notes relating to prime numbers, factors, etc., in the original edition of that work; and the oversight has now been corrected, with a table of factors and all the other glossolalia.
http://www.themagickalreview.org/classics/liber_0500.html
The Kelley Angelic font is now available in TrueType & Type 1 formats for both Mac and PC. It is also available in EOT format, which is a simplified format that can be embedded in web pages (but which is only viewable in IE 4.7+, so is practically useless). The whole lot is bundled together in http://www.themagickalreview.org/enochian/KelleyAngelic.zip.

The Three Characteristics, a fantastical allegory by Aleister Crowley, available in PDF format only:
http://www.themagickalreview.org/enochian/

The PDF version (not the HTML version) of The Ritual Opening of the Veil now includes the accentation of the Angelic words used in the “Angelic Cross”, to aid in pronunciation:
